Stages of Mesothelioma
The professional doctors currently use three different systems of classification to diagnose and treat the pleural mesothelioma. Each system takes into account different variables including the degree of cancer, the involucracion nodes lymph, of the metastasis, and more.
1. The system of Butchart is the system more old and more used and is based mainly on the extension of the mass of the tumor. The system of Butchart divides the mesothelioma in four stages:
* Stage I – The mesothelioma is seen in the left or right side of the chest, or of the cavity of the pleura, and also is possible to find in the diaphragm.
* Stage II – mesothelioma has invaded the fittings of the chest and reaches the esofago, the heart, or pleura on both sides. The nodes of lymph can also be affected.
* Stage III – mesothelioma has passed the diaphragm and has entered the abdominal cavity or peritoneum. The nodes of lymph, which are more alla of chest they can also be affected.
* Stage IV – mesothelioma has spread through the bloodstream movement to other organs
2. The system of TNM (by its acronym in spanish) is a system more recent used to classify the stages of mesothelioma whereas variables such as the size and the extension of the tumor, involvement of the nodes of lymph, and metastasis. In the system of TNM, the disease is divided into four phases:
* Stage I – The mesothelioma was added to the cavity right or left chest and could have been extended to the pericardium, the diaphragm, or the lung of the same side. The nodes of lymph are not affected.
* Stage II – mesothelioma has spread from one side of the breast to a lymph node near the lung in the same side. The disease also could have been extended to the lung, the diaphragm, or the pericardium in the same side.
* Stage III – mesothelioma has spread to the chest wall, the muscle, the heart, the esofago, ribs, and the vital organs in the pleural cavity in the same side. The nodes of lymph may or may not be affected in the side of the tumor.
* Stage IV – mesothelioma has spread to the nodes of lymph in the area of the chest to the other side of the tumor, or has spread to the pleural cavity or lung to the other side, or has reached organs in the area abdominal or neck. Any metastasis this involved in the fourth stage.
3. The system of Brigham is the latest system of classification for the stages of mesothelioma and is based on the feasibility of removing surgically tumor and the state of the nodes of lymph. The system of Brigham is divided into five stages:
* Stage I – The mesothelioma can be eliminated and the nodes of lymph are not affected
* Stage II – The mesothelioma can be eliminated, but the nodes of lymph have been affected
* Stage III – mesothelioma cannot be eliminated and has spread to the wall of chest, the diaphragm, the heart, or the abdominal area. The nodes of lymph may or may not be affected.
* Stage IV – Mesothelioma distant metastatic
